I personally prefer images of birds doing something other than just standing there. I like anything the keeps the image from being static. In this case, the bird was slowly walking along the shore and would stop to preen. It wasn't moving very much and was quite comfortable with my presence--I simply walked up and planted myself next to the shore to get his image. I shot a whole series of pictures while he was preening. Unfortunately, most were blurry because of his quick movement. This was the sharpest of the bunch.
