Using a flash as your primary light source tends to remove the texture of your subject. It begins to get that 2-d feel. This can be used to your advantage if you're doing something else to make the image "pop". In this case, the image litterally pops off the frame because it contrasts so much with the background. The bird practically looks like it's glowing. Sometimes a limitation can be used to an advantage.
