28 Feb 00 Dandelions in Jasper NP Most of the time when traveling through a park, I continually scan the roadsides for anything that may make a descent photographic subject. It's amazing what you can see if you let a small amount of your attention wonder into in the world blazing by. Of course I'm not saying do anything that may make driving unsafe. Still, I bet there's a small amount of your attention that can be used for enjoying the world and still keep things pointed in the right direction. Over a furious weekend in the fall last year, I drove by thousands of daisies blowing in the wind. They caught my attention but not enough to energize myself to get off the road and explore the situation. I'd flash by a cluster of daisy's, consider the situation as a photographic opportunity, all the while driving away a million miles an hour. By the time I'd finally decide to stop, the site was long past and with it any incentive to stop went with it. This went on dozens of times that one weekend. The only time the incentive to take a picture exceeded my inertia to keep going was when I finally passed a spot I'd considered stopping several times before. I had already designed the picture in my mind's eye by the time I pulled out the camera. The composition was simple and straightforward. I wanted the daisies and I wanted the mountains in the background. That meant my wide-angle since the wind was blowing relentlessly, I knew I couldn't freeze the daisies. I chose to go with the flow. If it's going to be blurry, might as well make it blurry. Considering there's nothing worse than a picture that looks like a mistake. Don't hope for the best and still make the mistake. Go with the flow. I occasionally get colorful critiques and comments on my photography. This image set a new standard. A friend said this colorful, soft, mountain scene reminded her of feminine hygiene products. I hardly ever shoot for a particular purpose and definitely not for commercial purposes. I'm not even sure I see that aspect in this image. I guess everyone sees different things in everything. |
