Taking this image was quite the experience. I had woken up pre-dawn on a post Christmas morning to shoot a location I scouted the day prior. Expecting a wonderful sunrise, I spent the morning trying to capture the flowing Athabasca river and the intense cold of the morning. After about two hours, I hadn't taken a single satisfying image. Nothing seemed to work. I packed my gear up in frustration thinking the morning was complete. Not only that I'd already lost the feeling in my toes--the temps were -30 F. Just as I was loading up my last bit of equipment in the car, the sun broke the surrounding mountain crest and blasted this beam of light along the river. Withou any thought to exposure, I just picked up a camera with my 70-180 Micro-Nikkor and shot one frame. I would've stayed longer but my body was already spent from the morning cold. Normally I'm very methodical about my landscape images. This image was almost taken with an approach any snapshot artist would appreciate.
